At a time when there seems to be ever more natural and man made disasters to pull on our heart strings, how can we reach out and feel that what we give will make a difference?
I am sure that like me when you give money to your favourite or chosen charity, that you may wonder how much of your donation will actually reach the people who need it, I remember feeling cheated when I learned a charity I gave to took 80% of my donation for administrative expenses. subsequently I didn’t give to that organisation again.
One way of giving and seeing the results first hand is to give our time, all of what we give will reach the people in need of our help and we will feel the benefits of our gift, it’s easy to know whether what we give is making a difference.
If you have a couple of hours a week to spare and would like to give, but don’t know where to start a good first step is to contact your local authority or council and ask for the number for the nearest CVS (council for voluntary service). You will be able to complete a short questionnaire or say what interests you have and the CVS will advise you of all the volunteering opportunities available in your area.
It’s a good idea to ask if you can go along and meet someone who already volunteers at your chosen project to see what is involved and get a sense of whether it meets your expectations. It’s a good idea to get involved in something you feel passionate about, you will get more from the gift of your time and feel happy to give.
I can honestly say that giving time is much more rewarding than giving money, and every minute makes a difference, enjoy giving.
